Scene 3: The Guardian's Challenge β’ 1,247 words
The ancient door groaned as Maya pushed it open, its hinges protesting after centuries of silence. Beyond lay a vast chamber that defied the modest exterior of the abandoned building she'd entered. Towering shelves stretched into shadows above, lined with books that seemed to shimmer with their own inner light.
"Welcome, seeker," a voice echoed from the depths of the library, neither young nor old, carrying the weight of ages. "I am the Guardian of the Last Library, keeper of humanity's final collection of written knowledge."
Maya's heart raced. The legends were trueβsomewhere in the world, one library had survived the Great Burning, hidden from those who sought to erase human learning. She stepped forward, her footsteps echoing in the sacred space.
"I seek knowledge," Maya said, finding her voice. "The old ways, the lost stories. I'm a librarianβwas a librarian, before they destroyed the public libraries."
The Guardian materialized from the shadowsβtall, ethereal, with eyes like stars and robes that seemed woven from moonlight and memory. "Many claim to seek knowledge," the Guardian said, circling Maya slowly. "But few understand its true price. Knowledge demands sacrifice, dedication, and above all, wisdom in its use."
"I understand," Maya replied, though her voice trembled slightly. "I've seen what happens when knowledge dies. I've watched people forget their own history, their stories, their dreams."
[Master Plotwright suggests:] This is an excellent place to introduce the Guardian's test. Consider what specific challenge would reveal Maya's character and worthiness.
The Guardian nodded slowly, and for the first time, Maya saw something like approval in those ancient eyes. "Then you will face the Test of Three Truths. Answer correctly, and the knowledge of ages becomes your burden to bear. Answer falsely..." The Guardian's voice faded meaningfully.
